Transport authority workers threaten presidential palace protest

Public Transport Authority workers who have been protesting for three days at the authority headquarters in Nasr City threatened to stage a protest before the presidential palace on Sunday if their demands are not met.

They have been calling for the authority to be affiliated to the Transportation Ministry instead of the Cairo Governorate.

Tareq al-Beheiry, spokesperson of the independent syndicate for authority workers, said the administration has been ignoring the protesters’ demands and that they would escalate the protest by demonstrating before the presidential palace.

Beheiry accused Mona Mostafa, head of the authority, of being reluctant to implement what was agreed upon during a meeting with workers’ representatives on 3 July. The agreement included disbursing the end-of-service bonus (two months for every year) without maximum limits and paying the excellent driving bonus.

He added that the authority’s daily income has recently increased from LE1 million to LE1,200,000, saying that buses are deteriorating and should be upgraded.
