Unidentified suspects throw rocks on Sadat station metro tracks to halt service

About 20 people hurled stones onto the tracks at Sadat metro station downtown in an attempt to halt trains before being removed by security forces, state-run news agency MENA reported Wednesday.

MENA did not mention the motive behind the attempt, but said some of the suspects are still gathered outside the station and are trying to stop passengers from entering. Trains are reportedly running on a normal schedule without delays.

This is the second time that Sadat metro station has been targeted by protesters. On Sunday, unidentified masked men told the station chief to close the metro stop in what they said was an act of civil disobedience to voice objection to the president's constitutional declaration and the draft constitution.

The president's November decree and his fast-tracking of the constitution draft for approval has prompted large protests and clashes between his supporters and opponents. Some have also called for acts of civil disobedience.

The constitution is scheduled to be put to a popular referendum over the next two Saturdays, elections officials announced Wednesday.
