Violent clashes broke out between protesters and anonymous assailants in Sidi Gaber, just outside the northern military zone in Alexandria Governorate, on Friday evening. Bladed weapons and sticks were reportedly used in the clashes.
Protesters pelted stones at the armed assailants on Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail Street, and hit-and-run operations were reportedly undertaken by both sides in the surrounding streets.
Hundreds of protesters marched from Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque in Alexandria to the northern military region after Friday prayers today, demanding the dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood and the return of military rule.
The mosque’s sheikh did not deliver his Friday sermon this week due to the demonstrations.
The protesters chanted, “Revolution renewed,” and “Down with the Supreme Guide,” as they carried banners reading, “The Guidance Bureau will not rule us,” “Down with the Brotherhood state” and “The people want to bring down the regime." They also raised photographs of recently killed protesters and activists, including Mohamed al-Guindy.
Rumors circulated that the Muslim Brotherhood offices in Alexandria’s Asafra neighborhood were set on fire, but Brotherhood spokesperson Anas al-Qady denied the reports.
A new campaign called "We are sorry Armed Forces" said it has collected 32,000 names on a petition calling for the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to regain control of the country until early presidential elections are held.
