Former MP Essam al-Erian has denied that he would replace President-elect Mohamed Morsy as the new chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.
Erian said in a statement issued by the FJP that he still was serving as vice chairman and that no date has been set for the party's general conference to meet to choose a new chairman.
He said the news published on the FJP official website was a mistake made by one of the editors, and that the issue was currently being investigated.
Morsy immediately resigned from his post and gave up his Brotherhood membership as soon as he was declared the winner of the presidential election on Sunday. His decision came in response to demands by political and revolutionary groups that have been wary he would fall under the Brotherhood's influence if elected.
Erian had also chaired the People's Assembly Foreign Affairs Committee before a court dissolved the lower house of Parliament earlier this month.
