Update: Former parliament speaker’s interrogation postponed, but he’s banned from travel

The Illicit Gains Authority decided to defer the interrogation of former People’s Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour to Sunday due to his health condition.

Later on Thursday the authority also banned Sorour from travel. Also included in the travel ban were fellow suspects former MP Ibrahim Kamel and his wife and children, businessman Mohamed Abul Enein, and president of the Egyptian Trade Unions Feeration Hussein Megawer.

In addition, the authority banned Abul Enein and Kamel from accessing any liquid assets, real estate, stocks and or bank accounts. Allegedly, Kamel recently received LE4 billion in bank loans.

Sorour had not been confronted with the charges of illicit gains during investigations conducted with him in April and May last year over his alleged involvement in the so-called “Battle of the Camel.”

He was acquitted on Wednesday alongside 23 other senior officials from former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime who had been accused of masterminding the assault on protesters in Tahrir Square on 2 and 3 February last year, during which armed men rode through square on camels and horses.
