Update: Protesters cause LE25,000 in damages after setting Sharqiya headquarters ablaze

Sharqiya Governorate headquarters suffered losses amounting to LE25,000 after protesters set it ablaze Monday afternoon, said prosecutors.

Investigating authorities seized Molotov cocktails and stones found at the scene as evidence. They ordered that power to the building be cut to avoid a short circuit following a water leak in the building’s upper floors.

Protesters stormed the municipal building today following clashes with security forces.

Demonstrators hurled Molotov cocktails, setting fire to the first floor of the building. Documents, computers and photocopiers were reportedly destroyed in the blaze.

Ten fire engines were deployed to the scene. Security forces cordoned off the area, then dispersed the protesters.

Prosecutors were sent to the scene of the clashes. They ordered immediate investigation into the incident and the arrest of those responsible.
