US official: new constitution should protect freedoms, basic rights

Assistant US Secretary of State for Democracy and Human Rights Michael Posner said on Friday that Washington understands that there is a new situation and leader in Egypt.

Posner said the White House plans on being in constant contact with the new Egyptian leadership, to help ensure the writing of a new constitution that protects freedoms and safeguards the dignity of citizens.

Posner made the statements in Washington at a conference on Copts in Egypt during the current period.  He said the US’s role was to be a defender of human rights and democracy, and to make sure that every Egyptian can practice their religion freely.
