51 arrested for Delga violence

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat has ordered 51 defendants be detained for 15 days pending investigations for their alleged role in violence in the Minya village of Delga in Upper Egypt.

Defendants face charges of resisting arrest, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, incitement to commit murder as well as attempted murder.

Others are accused of acts of terrorism and thuggery, forming and joining gangs, arson, and vandalizing public and private property.

Delga has witnessed clashes between Muslims and Christians since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsy in July. Churches in the village were burned down and Islamists were accused of extorting money from terrified local Christians in return for protection.
