Six hundred Suez Cement Company workers from the Wadi Hogul branch in Suez have been on strike since Sunday to protest company administration depriving them of one month out of a 12-month profit share in the company.
Magdy Abdel Hamid, head of the trade union committee formed by company workers, said the committee and the workers notified administration on Thursday that they were going to escalate the situation by staging a strike on Sunday if their demands were not met.
As the demands were not fulfilled, the workers notified Governor Major General Al-Araby Al-Sarawy, Security Chief Major General Tareq al-Gazzar and other figures about their strike.
Workers at the company’s Moqattam branch and at the main headquarters are also on strike for the same reasons, according to Abdel Hamid.
He added that he will file a complaint to Public Prosecutor Hesham Barakat on Monday to guarantee the workers’ rights.
Meanwhile, the company, which is a subsidiary of Italcementi Group, said on Tuesday the protest halted production in one of the furnaces of the factory, in addition to stopping deliveries from the factory, according to Egyptian Exchange EGX.
The cement maker said workers were protesting the proposed profit share distribution of LE37.8 million.
Suez Cement operates five plants in Suez, Kattameya, Tourah, Helwan and Minya and employs a total of approximately 3,500 workers. The company is one of the leading cement manufacturers in the Egyptian market.
