Veterinarians Syndicate President Sami Taha has said that 500,000 sheep and 250,000 cattle were slaughtered for Eid al-Adha.
Official sources at the Ministry of Agriculture estimated the value of the cattle at LE1.75 billion and the value of the sheep at LE1 billion.
They also said that the comparatively low figure of 1,500,000 people slaughtered animals for the holiday, attributing this to the high poverty rate in Egypt.
Hassan Hafez, chairperson of the Camel Importers Association, said 25,000 camels worth LE200 million were slaughtered. “Prices of camels went down this year,” he said.
Sources at the General Authority for Veterinary Services said the meat that was consumed during Eid equaled 10 percent of the total aggregate meat consumption per year.
