9 January set as Christmas holiday by banks and stock market

Egypt's stock market management declared Sunday 9 January an official holiday for Christmas celebrations, informed sources said.

Sunday was named instead of Friday, Egypt's official weekly day off, which this year coincides with the Coptic celebration of Christmas on 7 January. Work will resume on Monday 10 January, according to the sources.

A similar declaration was made by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), which issued a statement on Monday congratulating the Coptic community on the occasion.

Egyptian Copts have been in a state of outrage and mourning since a New Year's Eve suicide bombing that targeted a church in Alexandria’s Sidi Beshr district. The attack claimed the lives of 21 and injured 96 others. It lead to protests by Christians which developed into clashes with security forces.
