NGO urges transparency in TV quizzes

A Egypt-based NGO has demanded Egyptian and Arab satellite channels to heed transparency on running quiz phone-in shows and to elaborate on profits drawn from those programs.

One World Foundation, a social development foundation, called upon Arab satellite channels running quizzes through phone calls and SMSs to disclose the number of participants attracted by the shows, as well as declaring the profit shares obtained by telecommunication companies from the process.

It also urged the channels to reveal the taxes they pay for their hosting countries.

The statement by the organization cited the UN Convention against Corruption which urges transparency in the activities of the private sector.

Over the past year, Egyptian authorities said they cracked down on several satellite channels both for airing illegally and for quiz scams.
