A watchman at an archaeological site in Minya was killed and another was wounded on Saturday after they came under attack in an apparent heist attempt.
The unknown attackers shot at the guards in the Deir al-Bersha area, which falls under the supervision of the Antiquities Ministry.
Many archaeological sites were ransacked following the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, although authorities have since managed to retrieve many items that were stolen.
Unauthorized excavations by civilian fortune hunters have also become common over the past few years.
