The World Health Organization announced that Egypt now has the ability to conduct up to 200,000 coronavirus tests.
It added that Egypt is working hard and making great efforts to control the coronavirus pandemic, though it said there was still much that could be done.
In a statement commenting on the visit of a delegation of experts offering technical support to Egypt, the organization added that the nation’s robust pandemic monitoring system and case tracking efforts have proven effective in controlling separate cases and groups of cases before they can spread.
The Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases at the WHO Regional Office Evan Houten said that Egypt was doing a great job, considering that Egypt has a critical opportunity now to effectively control the spread of the disease before moving from the current stage to the next one that is the community transition stage.
Earlier, the Minister of Health Hala Zayed said in a press conference that the ministry has so far conducted 25,000 tests for coronavirus.
Zayed added that Egypt depends on the same drugs used by countries, including France and the US, to treat people infected with coronavirus, pointing out that the drugs used are “old medicines” for malaria and HIV patients.
Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population confirmed on Monday the total number of COVID-19 deaths has now reached three hundred and thirty-seven nationwide, after announcing twenty deaths.
248 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed, bringing the country’s number of infected cases so far to 4,782.
The newly infected cases are all Egyptian nationals, Health Ministry Spokesperson Khaled Megahed said, adding that the total number of fully-recovered cases rose to 1,236 all of whom have been discharged from isolation hospitals.
Sixty cases left quarantine on Monday.
