Thermal cameras installed at Cairo airport to detect coronavirus cases

The Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation began installing infrared thermal cameras in Cairo International Airport as means of helping detect coronavirus infections among arriving passengers.

Sources at the Ministry of Civil Aviation said that the infrared thermal cameras photograph each passenger from the head to the waist and measure their temperature. They then create an alert if the passenger’s temperature is higher than permissible levels.

The sources added that this is one of the methods now used internationally to identify suspected coronavirus infections. The cameras can monitor a gathering of up to 40 passengers in a few seconds.

Thermal cameras will be distributed to all Egyptian airports, starting with Cairo, and then moving to airports in Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, Sohag, Assiut and Borg al-Arab.
