Egypt’s Ministry of Health declares state of emergency amid severe weather warnings

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has declared a state of maximum preparedness across all hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide. This proactive measure follows urgent warnings from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) regarding significant weather instability expected to impact the country on Wednesday and Thursday, March 25-26.

Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar has directed all medical institutions to raise their readiness levels, specifically focusing on emergency departments, intensive care units, and trauma centers. To ensure the resilience of the healthcare system, the Ministry has secured a robust supply of essential medicines, medical equipment, and comprehensive reserves of all blood types and derivatives.

The Egyptian Ambulance Authority has mobilized a massive logistics fleet to manage potential emergencies, deploying 2,400 ambulances across all governorates. This specialized deployment includes 48 four-wheel-drive vehicles for rugged desert and mountainous terrain, as well as 11 ambulance launches to provide emergency coverage for the Nile islands.

In addition to emergency medical response, the Ministry is intensifying its preventative health measures. Officials are closely monitoring the quality of drinking water and sanitation systems to prevent any environmental health risks. Furthermore, a strategic supply of scorpion and snake antivenom has been distributed to all regional hospitals to treat potential injuries caused by the displacement of wildlife during the storms.

The Ministry urges all citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid areas prone to water accumulation or flooding, and strictly follow official safety guidelines. For immediate medical assistance or to report emergencies, the public is encouraged to contact the Ministry’s dedicated Hotline 137, which remains operational 24 hours a day throughout the weather event.
