Egypt wins chairmanship of AI governance, quantum computing working groups at Arab AI Committee

Egypt won on Friday, July 31, 2026, the presidency of the AI Governance Working Group and the Quantum Computing Working Group under the Arab Permanent Committee for AI and Emerging Technologies, affiliated with the Arab Ministers of Council for Communications and Information, reflecting Arab trust in Egypt’s growing role in future technologies.

The committee aims to enhance Arab integration in AI and emerging technologies while supporting digital transformation efforts to build an innovation-based knowledge economy and present a unified Arab position in international forums.

Egypt’s election took place during the committee’s second founding meeting in Tunisia, attended by representatives of Arab states alongside regional and international organizations serving as observers.

The committee’s formation implements a resolution issued by the Council of Arab Ministers of Communication and Information during its 29th session hosted by Egypt in January 2026.

The committee is tasked with developing regional policies for AI, supporting digital transformation across sectors, enhancing human capacity building, exchanging expertise, monitoring global technological developments, and periodically evaluating recommendations.

It also prepares strategic frameworks for adopting modern technologies, proposes regional and international agreements, establishes specialized working groups, and coordinates between member states in international arenas.

Comprising six specialized working groups, the committee includes representatives from Arab nations and observer entities, with each working group electing a chair and two deputies from member states.

Egypt previously hosted the committee’s first founding meeting at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology headquarters last May.

The AI Governance Working Group develops a guidance framework for AI governance, technical tools, and mechanisms for activating the Arab Charter for AI Ethics.

Meanwhile, the Quantum Computing Working Group focuses on drafting an Arab strategy for quantum computing, developing applications, tracking global research, and exploring quantum cybersecurity deployment.
