The international watchdog Amnesty International has called for a global “Day of solidarity and defiance” with a mass rally supporting peaceful protesters in Egypt and the region on Saturday.
The London-based group asked people around the world to wear one of the colors of the Egyptian flag–black, white and red–to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Egypt and the wider MENA region in their demands for reform, freedom, basic human rights and an end to repression.
International rights groups and solidarity movements have confirmed their participation.
Solidarity rallies are expected to be held in around 20 countries including Australia, US, Spain, France, South Korea, Puerto Rico, Morocco and Norway.
Some countries such as Spain and US will have more than one rally.
In London, Amnesty International activists, trade unionists, students and others will gather at Trafalgar Square from 12PM to 2PM GMT.
The group has said that it will show a large screen providing a TV link with protestors in Egypt’s Tahrir Square, the event is being billed as a “Trafalgar to Tahrir” act of solidarity, with social media activists tweeting and uploading solidarity images in real time.
