Tourism ministry intervenes to resolve pilgrims’ visas problem

The tourism ministry “has intervened to resolve the problem of a halt to visa issuing for more than 35,000 pilgrims” to Mecca, the Egyptian cabinet said on Sunday.

On Facebook, the cabinet published a post saying all pilgrims will get their passports stamped within hours.

State-run news agency MENA reported Sunday a huge increase in the number of pilgrims this Ramadan.

Deputy Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou said he discussed the issue with the Saudi ambassador to Egypt to swiftly resolve the problem and get the visas issued, according to MENA.

A state of confusion has emerged among Egyptian tourism agencies due to the halt in visa issuing.

Saudi authorities blamed the problem on a shortage of visa stickers at the three Saudi consulates in Egypt, which are located in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria.
