An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit Nuweiba at 2:25PM (Cairo time) on Thursday, said Salah Mahmoud, head of the Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. No losses have been reported.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 70km from the east coast of the Gulf of Aqaba to the east of Nuweiba and 150km north of the city of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, at a depth of 15km from the Earth’s surface.
Mahmoud also said the Gulf of Aqaba is a seismically active area where earthquakes occur frequently and periodically.
