Alliance of Egypt’s Revolutionaries calls for demos against Shafiq

The Alliance of Egypt’s Revolutionaries has called for nationwide demonstrations on Friday to declare the political isolation of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq, and demand the toppling of what it called the "new Mubarak regime."

In a statement on Wednesday, the alliance also said that the military council is insisting on retaining that regime despite all the sacrifices and the blood that flowed for the sake of the homeland.

The statement cast doubt over the transparency of the first round of the presidential election on the grounds that there were 45 million eligible voters in the 19 March referendum, who became more than 50 million voters in just 12 months, which the statement said cannot happen even in China.

The statement also lashed out at the Presidential Elections Commission, saying it adopts the same method as the military council in evading to clarify queries.

“We do not support Mohamed Morsy, either,” said alliance spokesperson Amer al-Wakil, calling for the appointment of two parliamentarians from the revolutionary bloc in high positions in a government to be headed by Mohamed ElBaradei.
