Amr Moussa: Situation in Arab region more serious than many imagine

Former Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa warned that the situation in the Arab region is currently more serious than many people imagine.

He added in a lecture he gave Thursday in the Jordanian capital Amman that the situation cannot continue as it was before uprisings in a number of countries against poor management and conditions.

The accumulation of the negative consequences of mismanagement has put us in front of very serious problems, Moussa said.

The reform process will take time, and needs a plan and sincere, uncorrupt people, according to Moussa.

Moussa attributed the deterioration of Arab and regional situations to two reasons: foreign interventions and poor governance in many countries.

He added that foreign powers are currently dividing the Arab region as they did 100 years ago when they developed the Sykes-Picot agreement to divide up the Ottoman Empire, only now they are doing it in accordance to modern international law.

The lecture, organized by the International Affairs Association of Jordan, a civil society organization, was on the latest developments in the Arab region and its future. Many Jordanian officials attended, including Fayez Tarawneh, chief of royal court in Jordan, and the two former Jordanian prime ministers Taher al-Masry and Abdel Salam al-Magaly.
