Army forces cordoned a nuclear reactor belonging to the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority in Sharqiya on Tuesday evening, following a sit-in organized by the technicians working on the reactor.
The protesting technicians demanded that the authority be “cleansed of corruption,” higher salaries and promotions.
The technicians decided to suspend their sit-in for three days after receiving promises that they would receive a response to their demands by Sunday. Military leaders held a meeting with them asking them to end their protest.
The protesters threatened to move their sit-in to the presidential palace if their demands are not answered.
The technicians have been protesting for two days. They say that “most leading [officials] in the authority had their salaries drastically raised after the revolution. When we [the technicians] demanded higher wages, we were surprised when a number of officials in the authority waged an intimidation war against us, as they made security reports about us to dissuade us from demanding our rights.”
