Bibliotheca Alexandrina to annex Suzanne Mubarak secret account

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is currently studying the steps necessary to annex a bank account under the name of ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s wife Suzanne Thabet. The secret account allegedly contains library donations.

Mustafa Bakri, a former member of Egypt’s parliament, provided the Attorney General with documents evidencing exploitation of the foreign donations going into the account.

Library officials told Al-Masry Al-Youm the annexing of the account was underway, in order to “ensure the continuance of the library's role in serving Egypt.”

Director Ismail Serageldin previously denied any knowledge of the account–which holds US$147 million–and said the Bibliotheca’s administration had not been informed of its existence either by the former president’s office or Thabet herself. Serageldin said he first knew of its existence when Bakri filed the complaint.
