The strike by public bus drivers has escalated after the Greater Cairo Transportation Company, which owns four garages, announced that it decided to join the strike which started six days ago.
Among the protesting drivers are 12 who went on hunger strike in al-Mazalat garage. They demand better bonuses and to be affiliated with the Transportation Ministry rather than municipalities.
Minister of Manpower Ahmed Hassan al-Borai said the strike is costing the government LE1 million per day. “The government needs LE140 million to meet the demands of drivers,” he said, adding that no financial resources are available for that purpose.
