Cairo police arrest two people for beating horse to death

Police on Tuesday arrested the owner of a horse-drawn carriage and an unemployed accomplice for beating a horse to death in Cairo’s Waily district.

The owner explained that he had used a stick to try and rouse his horse after it had collapsed, only to have accidentally killed it.

Police found the dead horse in a street under the jurisdiction of the Zawya police station. After removing the carcass, the police then proceeded with the necessary legal measures.

Article #355 of the Egyptian Penal Code stipulates that any person found guilty of harming or killing any animals used for riding, drawing and carrying, or any sort of cattle, will be imprisoned with hard labor.

The article further stipulates that anyone found guilty of poisoning or attempting to harm these animals will be punished with a fine or a maximum of one year imprisonment.
