Current sugar reserves sufficient for 4 months, says ministry

Egypthas sugar reserves for the next four months, said sources from the Ministry of Social Solidarity, adding that the recent sugar crisis has not impacted these reserves.

In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the same source said the ministry expects sugar prices to drop over the coming period.

Beet root and sugar cane will be supplied at LE4500 a ton this season, which means that the market price for one kilo of sugar will range between LE4 and LE4.5 and will be sold to the consumer at LE5, down from LE6.

People who hold ration cards have remained unaffected by the rise in sugar prices, the source said.

The source also said that the ministry is conducting studies to develop mechanisms to maintain commodity prices at stable levels.
