Doctors at the hospital in which the Tora Prison inmate, Essam Atta, 23, died, have concurred that he was poisoned, but that there were no signs of torture on his body, according to official investigations.
The death of Atta on Thursday has sparked fury after the human rights watchdog Nadeem Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture said that he was subjected to torture at the hands of the prison guards.
Activists accused Egypt's military rulers of pursuing security practices similar to those applied by ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
Prosecutors summoned three doctors from the Poisonings Center at the Manyal University Hospital, who said that in conducting the autopsy on Atta’s body they found no obvious injuries that indicate that he was tortured.
However, doctors confirmed to the prosecutors that Atta was poisoned.
Atta’s father accused the prison guards of killing his son, saying that he learnt from the families of the other prisoners that the prison guards had tortured his son.
