Egypt is attending an exceptional meeting of the Nile Basin countries in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Saturday. Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hossam Maghazy is heading the Egyptian delegation.
Egyptian ambassador to Sudan Osama Shaltout said Egypt is presenting its vision for joint cooperation to benefit all parties. “It is a chance for Egypt to clarify points of contention on the Nile Basin Framework Convention,” he said, adding that Cairo has frozen its activities in the Nile Basin Framework Initiative several years ago because it contradicts its interests. “But Egypt will attend ministerial meetings.”
In a related development, Khartoum is hosting next Sunday the Ninth Regional Celebration of Nile Day under the slogan of “Water and the Improvement of Life under the Cooperation of Nile Basin Countries.”
The celebration, which ministers of Nile Basin countries are attending, aims to shed light on how water improves livelihoods and how the Nile Basin countries exchange expertise and ideas to develop their water resources.
