Egypt demands second commitment period for Kyoto Protocol

The Mexican government started unofficial negotiations with member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with a view to bringing closer together their divergent points of view on extending a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of gas emissions.

Assistant Foreign Minister for Environmental Affairs Motaz Ahmedein, in press statements on Sunday, said Egypt’s plans for renewable energy use depend on the results of a forthcoming conference on the voluntary efforts of developing nations regarding emissions.

“Such efforts depend on the financial and technical support that the industrial nations will give to the developing nations,” he explained.

He also said that Egypt and other developing member states will insist on a second commitment period for the industrial states of the Kyoto Protocol to continue efforts to reduce their gas emissions.
