Egypt FM rules out spread of Tunisia turmoil to Arab neighbors

The possibility that Tunisia's political uprising will spread to other Arab countries is “nonsense,” Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said in a press statement on Sunday.

“Those who are promoting fantasies and trying to ignite the situation will not achieve their goals and will only harm themselves," he said.

He asserted that a number of satellite television channels were attempting to "inflame and destroy Arab societies," pointing out that these channels were, "unfortunately, western or of western orientation."

Abu Gheit said he doubted that the Arab economic summit–scheduled to be held in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm al-Sheikh on Wednesday–would issue a resolution on Tunisia.

"But if the summit chooses to address the Tunisian issue, it will,” he said. “Overall, the will of the Tunisian people is the most important element in this regard."

"No one is resisting the will of the people, but the Tunisian public will also be accountable for this situation in the future," the FM added.
