Egyptian security forces prevented an attempt to smuggle weapons and gold ingots through the Salloum border crossing between northwest Egypt and Libya, security sources said.
Police apprehended Allam Waer, 21, an Egyptian living in Marsa Matrouh, after he crossed into Egypt from Libya. The authorities confiscated five Belgian-made firearms and three gold ingots weighing 5.9 kilograms.
The sources added that the suspect had hidden the items in his vehicle, which was also confiscated by police.
Military prosecutors were informed of the incident so they could begin investigations.
On 26 April, six Libyans and one Egyptian were also apprehended for smuggling ammunition, drugs, jewelry, and firearms across the borders into Egypt.
