Egypt wants nuclear-free Middle East, foreign minister says

Egypt hopes to make the Middle East free of nuclear weapons, Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr has said.

The minister heads Egypt’s delegation to the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, which starts Monday.

Representatives from 58 nations and four international organizations, including 45 heads of state, plan to attend the two-day summit.

Amr told Younhap, South Korea’s largest news agency, that the large number of countries participating in the summit shows the importance of nuclear security issues, particularly in the current unstable political environment.

Amr emphasized that Egypt hopes to make the Middle East a region free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.
