An Egyptian court ordered on Wednesday the dissolution of the Bar Association council and invalidated the results of the May 2009 elections.
The State Council’s Administrative Court based its ruling on a January Supreme Constitutional Court ruling that overturned a law used by President Hosni Mubarak's regime to interfere in trade union affairs, judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The Supreme Constitutional Court issued a landmark ruling on 2 January, scrapping Law 100/1993, which put trade union elections in the hands of the judiciary without regard for the internal trade union laws organizing elections.
According to the Administrative Court’s decision, a judiciary committee will be charged with administering Bar Association affairs until new elections are held.
Recently, lawyers filed a lawsuit to dissolve the Bar Association council. Some lawyers also launched a campaign last month to demand the withdrawal of confidence from the council, which is headed by Hamdi Khalifa.
