Former vice president Mohamed ElBaradei has said that recent controversial remarks by the justice minister on the relevancy of social backgrounds to judicial appointments reflect an absence of justice.
“When the very concept of justice is absent from a nation, nothing is left,” the Nobel laureate tweeted late Sunday.
He was commenting on remarks made by Justice Minister Mahfouz Saber in a TV interview on Sunday, in which he said people from lower social classes, like sons of garbage collectors, cannot be appointed to the judiciary. The minister cited that such people do not fit in the judicial field given their social background does not conform to the “prestige” of the judiciary.
The minister’s remarks triggered a social media campaign demanding his removal.
In his tweet, ElBaradei stressed that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights indiscriminately entitles anyone to assume public posts.
