Elevating living standards ‘contingent on improved data collection’

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif said Egypt seeks improvement in its relations with all African nations in order to elevate living standards continent-wide.

Minister of International Cooperation, Fayza Abul Naga, spoke on behalf of Nazif recently at the opening of the sixth forum for strengthening African statistical capacities. Conference participants emphasized the importance of improved efficiency in data collection to ameliorating quality of life.

Head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization And Statistics (CAPMAS) Abu Bakr al-Gendy echoed the calls for statistical improvements. He stressed the need to incorporate modern techniques in data collection.

Lafa Mebya, head of statistics division at the African Bank for Development, said poor financial and technical resources permits only 32 of Africa's 52 nations to conduct censuses. Mebya urged international assistance to help African nations in the process.
