ERTU warns new regulations will soon take effect

The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) has sent notices to broadcasting companies and stations to press them to follow new rules and regulations that will take effect 1 December.

Broadcasting companies strongly oppose ERTU's demand for an LE20000 annual fee. Industry leaders say the fee is illegal and in contravention of the International Telecommunications Regulations.

The companies in question began operations under these regulations in 2004. Four satellite TV stations and 5 broadcasting companies have been working with ERTU licenses in Egypt since that time.

President of Akhbar al-Qahira company Nader Gohar said the regulations stipulate the licenses must be issued free of charge to promote international cooperation in media and communications fields.
