US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns has arrived in Cairo, marking the first visit to Egypt by a US official since former President Hosni Mubarak stepped down on 11 February.
During his three-day visit Burns will meet with officials from the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.
Burns, who was received by the US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey, will also meet with representatives of the 25 January revolution and a number of Egyptian public figures.
He is also expected to discuss ways to provide assistance to Egypt in the coming period.
