FJP will study possibility of fielding presidential candidate

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party officially announced on Sunday that it is studying the possibility of fielding a candidate from the party or its parent group in the presidential election.

The party expressed concern that the election may be rigged in favor of a candidate that “some” intend to impose on the people, saying that Egyptians would never accept this.

It has also held the military junta responsible for the failure of Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri’s government, which it accuses of fabricating crises to place burdens on future governments. This represents a threat to the revolution and its goals, the statement added.

The party also warned of obstacles being placed in the path of democratic transformation, the FJP said. These obstacles ultimately affect people’s desire for stability and a better future purged of the ill effects left behind by the former regime, whose supporters are continuing to create crises such as fuel and butane gas shortages, the statement continued.

It also said that the people, who placed their confidence in the elected Parliament, would not allow it to become subject to political and economic maneuvers that impede their aspirations.

Parliament has managed to fight the corruption created by the former Mubarak regime in all state institutions, which has frightened the supporters of that regime and prompted them to create such crises, the statement went on to say.

Also in the statement, the FJP said Mubarak’s brother-in-law has been behind the fuel and butane gas crisis.

The party stressed that the Parliament nominated members of the constituent assembly, which will write Egypt’s new constitution, from a wide spectrum of political forces, not, as some have claimed, from the FJP.
