FM: Israeli recognition of ‘Somaliland’ is flagrant violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has condemned Israel’s unilateral and illegal recognition of “Somaliland,” describing it as a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

He emphasized, Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2026, that this move undermines international law, the UN Charter, and the African Union’s founding treaty, warning that such a step poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.

The minister’s remarks came during his participation in an African Union Peace and Security Council session, which was held virtually at Egypt’s request, to support Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.

Abdelatty stressed that Egypt firmly rejects any unilateral actions that threaten the stability of the continent and attempt to create new political realities without abiding by internationally recognized legal frameworks.

He reiterated Egypt’s full support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and condemned Israel’s recognition, holding Israel responsible for the consequences of this illegal decision.

The minister also highlighted Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to coordinate an international stance against the recognition, which led to a joint statement from 23 countries and two international organizations condemning the move and reaffirming Somalia’s sovereignty.

He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s security and stability, underlining that a stable Somalia is crucial for the security of the Horn of Africa and Red Sea shipping lanes, noting that Egypt continues its support through participation in the African Union mission aimed at stabilizing Somalia.

Abdelatty called for a unified stance from the African Union to condemn Israel’s recognition and reject any actions resulting from it, while reaffirming the commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity.
