Habib al-Adly referred to criminal court on profiteering charges

The Illicit Gains Authority decided Monday to refer former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly to criminal court on charges of illegally acquiring wealth worth LE181 million by abusing his powers.

The authority called for sentencing Adly to hard labor in prison and forcing him, his wife Elham Sharshar and his son Sherif to pay back the money.

Investigators say Adly owns four palaces in Marina, plots of land in Alexandria and Sheikh Zayed, property in 6th of October City, an apartment in Alexandria’s San Stefano Towers, and LE84 million in bank accounts.

Adly has been convicted in several cases since the 25 January revolution toppled former President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February.

The Court of Cassation accepted last month an appeal Adly filed against a ruling that sentenced him to 12 years in prison on charges of profiteering and money laundering.

In May 2011, Giza Criminal Court sentenced Adly to 12 years imprisonment and fined him LE4.9 million. Adly had allowed companies to illegally use plots of ministry-owned land.

In February, an Egyptian court sentenced Adly and his aide, Hassan Abdel Hamid, to three years in prison. It also sentenced Bassem Ahmed Lotfy, the leader of Adly’s personal guards, to a year of hard labor after all three were indicted on charges of forcing conscripts and policemen to do agricultural and construction work on land Adly owned.

Cairo Criminal Court had also sentenced Adly and Mubarak to 25 years in prison for their role in the killing of protesters during the 25 January revolution. Adly and Mubarak challenged the sentences, and will be retried on 13 April.
