Half a million non-standard workers in Egypt register for government support

Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saafan on Saturday said that 500,000 non-standard workers from all over Egypt had registered their data through the ministry’s website within a week.

He stressed the need for speedy registration from non-standard workers as registering their data is the basis for disbursing exceptional grants from the government.

Registration is available through the ministry’s website, he said.

In a statement, he clarified that the registered workers’ data is being scrutinized in preparation to provide support and lift their burdens in light of the exceptional circumstances the country currently faces – especially as non-standard workers do not have a stable income.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi attaches great importance to this issue, he added, within the umbrella of a comprehensive plan to protect non-standard workers from the coronavirus pandemic’s repercussions.

Saafan noted that the ministry has dedicated phone number 01212201303 to receive non-standard worker inquiries on WhatsApp and so far have reached nearly 139,000 inquiries, though most are complaints not related to non-standard workers.

The ministry has futher warned that citizens must be careful of rumors claiming that grants will be dispersed to anyone sending their data through WhatsApp.

Saafan urged non-standard workers to register directly through the ministry’s official website.

President Sisi previously announced a LE100 billion comprehensive plan to counter the outbreak and its negative economic consequences.

Egypt announced on Friday 41 new coronavirus cases and six additional deaths, bringing the total number of cases confirmed so far in the country to 536.

Thirty people have died from the virus in Egypt, as well as two senior military officers.

There have been over 600,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide and upwards of 27,400 deaths.
