The Journalists Syndicate is considering withdrawing from the constituent assembly tasked with drafting the new constitution, which would make it the latest group to join a number of political forces protesting the assembly's lack of broad representation.
Alaa al-Attar, a syndicate board member, wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday that an emergency meeting is scheduled for Thursday to discuss whether the syndicate representative on the assembly should back out.
Syndicate Chairman Mamdouh al-Wali is one of 50 public figures selected to take part in drafting the constitution.
Attar said that there is a strong feeling among board members that Wali should withdraw from the 100-member assembly. Like the Parliament that appointed it, the assembly is made up of mostly Islamist members.
Islamist MPs and prominent figures make up at least 60 percent of the panel, while women and Christian members each make up six percent.
The syndicate warned Monday against circumventing the aspirations of the people by drafting a constitution that only serves the interests of a certain group.
