President Mohamed Morsy told the Supreme Judicial Council today that he would limit exercising his newly gained legislative powers after cancelling the army’s constitutional declaration, and that he would yield those powers to the new parliament immediately once it is elected.
Morsy met with several political forces who expressed their support of the president's decision to replace Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi and Chief of Staff Sami Anan, presidential spokesperson Yasser Ali said Thursday. They praised Morsy for separating the military from politics, and for abolishing the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces constitutional supplement that limited the president’s powers.
Journalist Ayman al-Sayad quoted Morsy as saying that he would not single-handedly form a new Constituent Assembly if the existing one is dissolved, nor would he change any article that the people have voted on in the last referendum.
Sayad also said that author Alaa Al Aswany had reservations about Morsy granting Tantawi and other members of the military council medals of honor, instead agreeing with those who demand that Morsy bring all members of the military council to trial.
