Informed sources report that investigations by the Illicit Gains Authority have revealed that it was deposed President Hosni Mubarak who had personal access to the US$145 million bank account of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and not his wife, Suzanne, as was previously reported.
Members the library’s Board of Trustees, which included former Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni, former Minister of Higher Education Hani Helal, Alexandria University President Hend Hanafy and Alexandria Governor Adel Labib told prosecutors they did not know of the bank account.
They added that they issued a statement as soon as they heard of the account and expressed their astonishment as to why they were not informed of its existence.
MP Mostafa Bakry told the public prosecutor that the account was in the name of Hosni Mubarak’s wife. He also accused Mubarak and his family of abusing their power by amassing LE250 million in a bank account in the National Bank’s Heliopolis branch, where there are ten accounts in the name of Mubarak’s son Alaa, another eight in the name of his other son Gamal, and six in the name of his wife Suzanne.
Meanwhile, the committee that was formed to retrieve the Mubarak family’s money abroad is studying the proposal that Mubarak announced on Sunday, whereby he said he was willing to sign any document that enables the committee to access any accounts linked to him.
