Police and army forces on Wednesday dispersed railway workers protesting in Sharqiya Governorate, northeast of Cairo.
More than 2000 railway maintenance workers protested in Zagazig Wednesday morning to demand the removal of Egyptian National Railway Chief Mostafa Qenawy and his aids, accusing them of affiliation with former President Hosni Mubarak's regime.
The workers also demanded the disbursement of their allowances. Electrician Mohamed Salah said the workers have not yet received their April allowances.
Another protester said the army detained two workers and took them to an unknown destination.
Meanwhile, a number of railway passengers complained about the delay caused by the protest, noting that railway movement to and from Zagazig has been brought to a halt.
Army forces deployed to Zagazig's station gave demonstrators five minutes to end their protest before soldiers dispersed them using sticks and firing warning shots.
