Port Said cancels National Day celebrations amid housing protests

Port Said's governor ordered the province's National Day celebrations cancelled Sunday after hundreds of young men staged protests over housing.

Residents gathered and called for Governor Ahmed Abdullah to fulfill the government promise made earlier this year to assign low-income housing units on 23 December. Port Said celebrates its national day on that date in commemoration of the 56th anniversary of the popular struggle against tripartite aggression from Britain, France and Israel in 1956, also known as the Suez Crisis.

The governor's office told protesters that they are waiting until the Housing Ministry announces the conditions for obtaining such low-cost housing units.

Protesters rejected the response and continued their demonstration. They also prevented ferries and passengers from traveling to the other bank of the Suez Canal.
