Qatar sends first gas shipment to Egypt

Qatar sent a liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment as a grant to Egypt, Qatar News Agency (QNA) said on Friday.

This is the first of five shipmentz Doha has pledged to Cairo.

Qatar has allocated the LNG shipments to Egypt "to help reduce the impact of the energy crisis on the Egyptian people" in the midst of their country's political unrest, an official said, quoted by QNA."

Egyptian port facilities are not equipped to import LNG, but these shipments will allow Egypt to allocate more of their supplies for the domestic market.

A Qatar Gas Transport tanker left the port of Ras Laffan on Thursday en route to Egypt.

The capacity of the tanker is 260,000 cubic metres and is usually used for transferring fuel to Europe.

The gas shipment will help Egypt to face off the summer heat at a time of the year which usually sees an increase in energy consumption, leading to frequent power outages and blackouts.

The fuel transfer marks the first initiative by Qatar with Egypt since the overthrow of its ally, President Mohamed Morsy, early July. Qatar was among the countries providing most financial support to the Muslim Brotherhood's regime in Egypt and openly backed the 25 January revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
