Report: Prices of most food rose in April

The prices of most food commodities in April rose substantially compared to the same month last year, an Egyptian government report said on Tuesday.

The report, issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, said the prices of locally-produced rice doubled in April. The prices of potatoes rose by almost 60 percent and those of buffalo meat rose by 23.3 percent.

According to another report tracking the monthly increase in basic food prices, tomato prices climbed by 22.4 percent, the price of lemon by 32.8 percent, and local chicken prices by 2.5 percent in April from the month before.

The price of sugar increased by slightly more than 30 percent, while the price of butter increased by 3.4 percent.
