Supporters of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq clashed with protesters demanding he be expelled from the presidential runoff, following the cancellation of a Shafiq rally in the Korba area of New Cairo on Friday.
Minor clashes erupted after protesters chanted “the revolution is continuing,” and “out with the traitor” at Shafiq supporters. They also raised their shoes.
Nearby police separated the two sides soon after the clashes began.
Shafiq has encountered several angry crowds throughout his campaign. In Upper Egypt, an attendee at a rally hurled a shoe at him as he spoke. Leaving the polling station where he cast his vote, a crowd tried to hit him with shoes as a sign of contempt.
Shafiq and Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy are to face off in a runoff on 16 and 17 of June.
Supporters had erected a stage on which Shafiq was rumored to appear, but a campaign official told Egypt Independent late afternoon he would not be going to the rally.
Rally organizers officially canceled it at 6pm after a youth representing the Silent Majority Movement climbed the stage and asked the Shafiq supporters to leave.
